1834 Classic Head Half Cent
Classic Head Half Cents were produced from 1809-1835 and were the longest running half cents produced. Below is an image of the 1834 Classic Head that was designed by John Reich who was recommended to the mint by President Jefferson. This year is especially rare due to the fact that only 141,000 were produced.
This variety has a plain edge and is copper. It weighs 5.44 grams and its diameter is 23.5 millimeters. The values can range from $55 to well in excess of $30,000. In 1836 there was a proof only issue and that commands the highest price. In 2014, there was a 1836 1/2C Second Restrike Rev of 1840 design that sold for almost $100,000. The same year there was an 1836 Original Strike 1/2C that sold for about $78,000. If you happen to run across a half cent be sure to take a close look at it as they have become very collectible.
It is rare that I buy any modern pennies. I frequently purchase half cents simply because they make a brilliant addition to a coin collection.
